You can't expect them to meet you halfway, you're the professional designer, they're the client.įirstly, I hope you have a contract. You're basically always being a translator between design-speak and laymen-speak. That also includes explaining your choices, you can't talk to them as if they're another designer, you have to be able to recognize different types of people and figure out the most effective way to communicate your approach and reasoning such that they can understand, and therefore support, your choices. As the designer you need to be able to get past what they're saying at face value (or not saying at all), and get to the why behind those words, what they are feeling or trying to say, to ask the right questions to see things through their eyes, and be able to discuss the project in terms that make sense to them. I would also add to remember that in being non-designers, they do not have the same understanding or ability to communicate in design terms. I definitely learned that from now on I'll limit the number of concepts. I even reached the point where I wouldn't be mad if they just cancel the order, I just want to be done. As quite frankly the time spend doing all these designs isn't worth the money they are paying.
